The Salt Lake Tribune reports:
Salt Lake City police are asking the public for help identifying a man who hit another after asking if he was gay. The assault is captured in an eight-second video posted to Twitter on Sunday by Sal Trejo and quickly spread through social media.
The assault took place downtown and the video starts with the suspect asking “Are you gay though?” Trejo responds, “Oh, I am.” That’s when the man smacks him with his right hand.
Trejo posted a statement that the incident started when the man approached him and his friends “out of the blue and making homophobic and misogynistic comments” to them.
ABC News reports:
Trejo claimed the man punched him in the arm, pulled a knife on another member of his group and shoved one of his female friends.
The man then walked away, stepped into a black BMW and drove away erratically, with the car hitting soft dividers in the road.
Trejo described the person as a white man, approximately 23-24 years old, about 5’8,” dressed in blue jeans, camouflaged print sneakers, a forest green T-shirt, a silver watch and a Louis Vuitton belt.
My friends and I were assaulted by this homophobic man in downtown Salt Lake City last night. Anyone know him? The police are interested in having a chat with him. #SaltLakeCity @slcpd @slcmayor @EqualityUtah pic.twitter.com/1tPFSCADOp
