Florida Politics reports:
Gov. Ron DeSantis defended vetoing all funding for arts grants, saying he didn’t want state funds supporting sexual-themed festivals. He singled out Fringe Festivals, which draw thousands to Florida each year.
“We didn’t have control over how it was being given. So you have your tax dollars being given in grants to things like the Fringe Festival, which is like a sexual festival where they are doing all this stuff,” DeSantis said at a press conference. “How many of you think your tax dollars should go to fund that? Not very many people would do that.”
Molly Rowan-Deckert, Executive Director of the Alliance for the Arts, considered DeSantis’ remarks “horrifying.” She voiced a concern that DeSantis judged Fringe Festivals without ever attending one.

Critics note that Florida’s Fringe Festivals were near the bottom of the list of proposed grants and may not have gotten any public money in the first place.

Maybe what Ron DeSantis needs is a good psychiatrist to diagnose his textbook Freudian homophobia. He should keep his rage away from our arts and in his wife Tacky O’s schlocky princess pageant dress closet, FFS. pic.twitter.com/9UBCneEJkH

DeSantis cited “sexual” festivals as reason he vetoed more than $32M in arts funding across Florida this month.
Vetoes also included $55K for the Miami Book Fair, $70K for a local Jewish community center and $46K for an artist residency.https://t.co/N8QbEXtZEG @lmower3

This is batty even by DeSantis standards.
The money vetoed was also for opera, symphonies, children’s theater, art museums, zoos and more. These guys have an obsession with drag queens that I doubt Dr. Ruth could cure. https://t.co/KYv3ocADKW

DeSantis vetoed nearly $1 billion from Florida budget, including nearly $90 million earmarked for 669 different arts and culture projects & for special line item programs. It’s the first time that no money will be allocated for arts and culture programs. https://t.co/h7KxWGFeOy

Our Governor is an ignorant Neanderthal.
18,000 people attended @OrlandoFringe this year. Does he even know how many jobs or how much economic activity that created?
Art IS culture and abusing government power to censor and control culture is not what happens in “free” states. pic.twitter.com/btUQu3lbqI
