The quest of House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy to become speaker dragged on for a second day as Republican foes kept him from getting close to a majority of votes in another round of voting. Even a last-minute plea from Trump for Republicans to unify around McCarthy failed to sway 20 Republicans — the same number who voted against McCarthy in the final of three ballots Tuesday. Instead, they backed a new alternative, Rep.-elect Byron Donalds.
Moments after walking onto the floor with Rep.-elect Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) — who surprisingly voted present — Rep.-elect Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), who was chosen as his caucus’s whip, showed he’s putting his whipping skills to the test. He immediately walked up to Rep.-elect Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), a McCarthy opponent, in what appeared to be an animated discussion that included finger pointing.

Rep. Tom Emmer, the No. 3 Republican, just told me when asked if there will be a fifth ballot vote now: “I think we’re going to talk about that.”
Asked if it has been decided: “I don’t think so.”
