Oklahoma Schools Join Florida In Approving PragerU

Omaha’s NBC affiliate reports:

The Oklahoma State Department of Education announced an ongoing partnership with PragerU on Tuesday. “I am thrilled to announce this partnership with PragerU,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters.

Supt. Walters announced on Tuesday that OSDE has launched a partnership with PragerU Kids which “provides educational, entertaining, pro-American kids content.”

“This expansion of our availability resources will help ensure high quality materials rich in American History and values will be available to our teachers and students. We will work together to find ways for PragerU to create content that will enrich the education of Oklahoma student.” Supt. Walters added.

Forbes reports:

Content on the PragerU Kids YouTube channel, which has received backlash, includes a video depicting a cartoon Christopher Columbus saying slavery wasn’t an issue during his time period because of its widespread use and another describing George Floyd as a “Black man who resisted arrest.”

YouTube has restricted, demonetized and removed videos on PragerU’s primary YouTube channel, including two anti-trans videos that were pulled from the site for violating hate speech policies. Fracking billionaires Dan and Farris Wilks provided most of the seed money for PragerU in the platform’s early stages, according to multiple outlets.

In 2018, the Southern Poverty Law Center said some of PragerU’s videos function “as dog whistles to the extreme right,” referring to videos hosted by right-wing commentators Candace Owens and Dinesh D’Souza.

The FBI is currently investigating Walters’ department for misspending $1.7M in education funds on items such as “kitchen appliances, power tools, furniture and entertainment.”

Last month Walters posted a ranting video in which he baselessly claimed that China is secretly funding Tulsa’s public schools. His claim was immediately denounced by Tulsa officials.

In June, Walters appeared here when he announced that Oklahoma’s public schools will soon have a mandatory daily prayer, the mandatory posting of the Ten Commandments in classrooms, and a mandatory high school course in “Western civilization.”

In July, Walters declared that Oklahoma public school students will be taught that the infamous 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre was not inspired by racism.

Many expect Walters to run for governor when fellow Christian nationalist Gov. Kevin Stitt is term-limited out of office.
