Republican Field For House Speaker Tops Out At Nine

Politico reports:

The House GOP’s enormous speaker field is officially set, with nine Republicans seeking to somehow unify their splintered party after almost three weeks without a leader.

It’s the most crowded field since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s fall 19 days ago. The latest round of candidates includes current GOP leaders — like Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) and Vice Chair Mike Johnson (R-La.) — as well as more surprising rank and file members like Reps. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.).

Another last-minute addition, Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.), who serves as GOP policy chair, raised eyebrows on Sunday. Each of the candidates will face the near-impossible task of succeeding in both an internal vote and then a tricky floor vote that doomed the party’s last pick for speaker, Rep. Jim Jordan.

Palmer [photo], a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus, voted against certifying the result of the 2020 presidential election. Before running for office, Palmer founded and led the anti-LGBTQ Alabama Family Alliance. In March 2023, Palmer was among 26 House Republicans who refused to sign a statement condemning white supremacy and white nationalism. In 2020, Palmer received the “True Blue Award” from the Family Research Council for his 100% voting record against LGBTQ rights. His first appearance on JMG came in 2015 when he helped organize an Alabama rally against same-sex marriage, which he called “an attack on Christianity.”
