The medical website Medriva reports:
Last week, England experienced a surge in measles cases with a total of 118 new instances confirmed in regions such as the West Midlands, London, Yorkshire, and The Humber. This sudden outbreak of the highly infectious disease has stirred considerable worry among health officials and underscores the critical importance of maintaining robust vaccination protocols and public health measures to curb the spread of such diseases.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, the rise in UK measles cases is largely attributed to the decrease in MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination rates. Since October 2023, over 300 cases have been reported in England, prompting officials to declare a national incident. The total count has reached 465 since October 2023, with the outbreak spreading beyond the West Midlands.
The Telegraph reports:
Measles cases have risen by a third in a week, despite declarations the illness had been eliminated in Britain more than seven years ago. Health officials are increasingly concerned as the disease spreads beyond the West Midlands, where the most cases have been reported.
It comes after a man in Ireland died from the disease, it was confirmed on Wednesday, despite being the only case in the country this year. The man, who was in his 40s, is understood to have contracted the virus while visiting Birmingham, and he was later diagnosed at a hospital in Westmeath.
The number of people diagnosed with measles has risen each month. There were 17 cases in October, 42 in November, 161 in December and 240 in January.
