The New York Times reports:
Former President Donald J. Trump filed a defamation lawsuit against ABC News on Monday, arguing that the anchor George Stephanopoulos had harmed his reputation by saying multiple times on-air that Mr. Trump had been found liable for raping the writer E. Jean Carroll.
A jury in a Manhattan civil case last year found Mr. Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Ms. Carroll, but did not find the former president liable for rape
The judge, however, later clarified that because of New York’s narrow legal definition of “rape,” the jury’s finding did not mean that Ms. Carroll “failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape.’”
From the transcript of the Nancy Mace interview:
STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, actually, what you’re doing is defending a man who’s been found liable for rape. I don’t understand how you can do that.
MACE: Not in a criminal court of law. This was a civil judgment over sexual abuse, not rape, by the way, and she made a mockery out of it. So, which one are you going to —
STEPHANOPOULOS: Can we pull up “The Washington Post” headline right there? In fact, it has been shown to be rape. The judge affirmed that it was, in fact, rape. Donald Trump was found to have committed rape. That’s just a fact.
MACE: That is a civil judgment, not a criminal court. They’re two very different things and you know better.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, you’ve – I just showed you the facts right there.
Trump’s case: I was found liable for finger-rape, not penis-rape, so you owe me millions, doesn’t seem so strong. https://t.co/chcZAJR3Oq

Trump sued ABC and George Stephanopoulos for defamation over George Stephanopoulos’s interview of Nancy Mace — and my thread about the interview is cited repeatedly in the complaint https://t.co/qIcxCZ4N61

He’d be in a better position here if the judge hadn’t said it’s the plain English meaning of rape. Not sure how he gets around that one
