CBS News reports:
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi, along with the country’s foreign minister and others, were found dead Monday morning hours after their helicopter crashed in dense fog in a mountainous region of the country’s northwest, state media reported. Raisi was 63.
The crash comes at hugely a tumultuous time for the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas war, during which Raisi, under Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel just last month.
Under Raisi, Iran has enriched uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels, further escalating tension with the West as Tehran also supplied bomb-carrying drones to Russia for its war in Ukraine and continued arming proxy groups in the Mideast such as Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
The Associated Press reports:
IRNA said the crash killed eight people in all, including three crew members, aboard the Bell helicopter, which Iran purchased in the early 2000s.
Aircraft in Iran face a shortage of parts, often flying without safety checks against the backdrop of Western sanctions. Because of that, former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif sought to blame the United States for the crash in an interview Monday..
“One of the main culprits of yesterday’s tragedy is the United States, which … embargoed the sale of aircraft and aviation parts to Iran and does not allow the people of Iran to enjoy good aviation facilities,” Zarif said. “These will be recorded in the list of US crimes against the Iranian people.”
Cultists spent yesterday posting fake photos and videos on X that they claim “prove” that the CIA and/or Israel’s Mossad were behind the crash. Among the viral fake claims were accounts regularly boosted by Elon Musk.

2.8 million views for this alleged image of the wreckage of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter.
The problem? the image is from another plane crash in Iran that happened in 2020, and has nothing to do with Raisi’s death. https://t.co/y9iWe06geh pic.twitter.com/bAzl6GRGYz

I’ve done live fact-checking during breaking news events for years.
But the sheer volume of viral misinformation today regarding Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter crash posted by fake osint accounts and blue tick grifters for engagement has been something to behold.
