The Washington Post reports:
President-elect Donald Trump on Friday announced that Dave Weldon is his choice to serve as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the federal government’s top public health agency.
Weldon, 71, is a medical doctor and former lawmaker who served in the House, representing Florida. The former congressman has been a strong critic of the CDC, especially its vaccine program. Weldon has championed the long-debunked notion that thimerosal, a vaccine preservative, is linked to autism.
Weldon, who served in Congress for 14 years from 1995 to 2009, attracted national attention for his involvement in the case of Terri Schiavo, a brain-damaged Florida woman whose family’s attempts to remove her feeding tubes and end her life attracted national attention — and prompted interventions by congressional Republicans.
The New York Times reports:
As a member of congress, Dr. Weldon also authored the so-called Weldon Amendment, which barred the Department of Health and Human Services from funding federal or state programs that “discriminated” against health insurance plans that did not cover abortions.
He unsuccessfully sought a Senate seat in 2012 and a Florida House seat in 2024. Dr. Weldon also served as president of the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries, a trade group for Christian organizations that offered an alternative to traditional health insurance.
The groups have come under scrutiny for potentially misleading people into thinking the groups had some legal obligation to pay their medical claims. Dr. Weldon has said that the members of his association were clear that they were not offering insurance, which is subject to strict regulations.
Weldon’s sole previous appearance on JMG was about his playing bass guitar in a rock group comprised of House reps calling themselves the Second Amendments. Yes, really. The group played to overseas US troops. Weldon just lost his bid for a Florida state House seat by 35 points.
Trump names Dr. Dave Weldon to lead the CDC. Weldon is a former congressman and Fox News Contributor. What’s bad is that he is an internist. Not a researcher. Not an infectious disease doctor. Not a public health doctor. And he has pushed the vaccine-autism bs. Bad. Bad. Bad. pic.twitter.com/1sL4XA5sjJ
