Some House Republicans are prepared to block Trump from using a recess appointment on attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz. In the case of recess appointments, the House can use a procedural trick to block a president from bypassing the Senate.
Several House Republicans would vote against any motion to go into recess, Axios has learned. For Trump’s plan to work, he needs the cooperation of Speaker Mike Johnson, with nearly every other House Republican.
Trump is convinced that Johnson is on board. But Johnson can only afford to lose two or three lawmakers on a vote to go into recess. If Johnson lacks a majority, Trump will be denied his pretext to force Congress to adjourn.
Read the full article. Surely any House Republican that votes to thwart Trump’s plan will get the usual death threats.
This shouldn’t be a surprise, but it’s still welcome to hear that Members of Congress would not willingly eviscerate the Constitutional powers of their coordinate branch. More of this.
