Yahoo News reports:
A prominent transgender-rights activist disrupted a talk involving Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace in Washington, DC, on November 21, after Mace complained about criticism she received over her strongly anti-trans positions.
Sitting in the audience was Evan Greer, who is the director of Fight For The Future, a nonprofit that advocates for freedoms online, and a transgender activist. In response to Mace’s remarks, Greer rose from her seat, unfurled an LGBTQ pride flag, and criticized the South Carolina Republican for her attacks on the trans community.
As Greer was ejected, Mace replied and misgendered Greer, who goes by female pronouns. “God loves him, I love him, but his penis isn’t gonna be in my bathroom,” said Mace, prompting boos from the audience.
Fight For The Future reacts:
When her co-panelist Ro Khanna voiced his disagreement with her views, Mace replied, “Why do you hate women?” The audience at the summit repeatedly booed as Mace hurled her bigotry, and at least one attendee left in solidarity as Greer was removed.
Mace has dominated headlines in recent days by introducing bigoted and undemocratic legislation explicitly targeting her Congressional colleague, representative-elect Sarah McBride, the first transgender person elected to US Congress. Since introducing legislation to ban trans people from safely using bathrooms in the US Capitol, Mace has gone on a series of hate-filled rants online.
Rep. Mace has no significant background in tech policy or Internet regulation. Beyond a desire to cozy up to bigots and pander to the far right, it’s unclear why she was invited to speak at the summit, which was organized by Project Liberty, a group funded by billionaire Frank McCourt. The event is also sponsored by the Omidyar Network.
Mace went on to declare that trans people suffer from “mental illness.” In the last three days, Mace has posted anti-trans vitriol over 300 times to her X account. As you’ll see, the event’s organizers had a security guard seated near Greer, apparently in anticipation of a disruption. Just a couple of years ago, Mace was a vocal supporter of transgender rights.
