The Washington Post reports:
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) won a third term on Tuesday by fending off a challenge from Hung Cao, a MAGA Republican backed by former president Donald Trump, the Associated Press projected.
Cao’s vivid language drew fleeting national attention to the race at their lone debate, when he declared that the military does not need diversity in its ranks so much as “alpha males and alpha females who are going to rip out their own guts, eat them and ask for seconds.”
Cao also faced controversy over a political action committee he launched in early 2023 with the stated goal of promoting Republicans running that year for Virginia’s General Assembly. Unleash America super PAC raised $103,489 but spent its money on staff and firms associated with Cao’s Senate bid.
