“This was an extraordinary scene in the D.C. District Court where hundreds of these rioter cases have been handled. Philip Grillo was being sentenced for nonviolent crimes but felonies today in federal court. And the judge, Judge Royce Lamberth – the judge who sat on that bench the longest and is nearing the end of an extraordinary judicial career – puts him in prison immediately. That rarely happens in a situation like this. And then as the judge exits the courtroom, the defendant is standing there with the U.S. Marshal taking off his tie, taking off his belt, being put in handcuffs, and he yells out, ‘Trump’s gonna pardon me anyway!” – CNN legal reporter Katelyn Polantz, who added that two local New York GOP officials then shouted pro-Trump expressions.
Grillo, a former Queens Republican Party leader, launched a failed bid to replace George Santos in the US House and was convicted in December 2023.
During his trial Grillo earned a fleeting moment of infamy when he claimed not to know that Congress meets at the Capitol. And today he is in prison.

Here’s another: Jan 6 defendant Phi Grillo requests change of venue for trial
He argues DC jurors “are highly likely to view (him) not only as someone who victimized them, but also as someone who might victimize them again in the future”

“It is exceedingly rare for a judge to order a criminal defendant who is a nonviolent offender like Grillo to be taken into custody immediately at his sentencing. Lamberth gave little explanation for his reasoning for the immediate remand…..”https://t.co/j5M1yNKLS7
