CIA Decides COVID Originated In Chinese Laboratory

The Washington Post reports:

The CIA said Saturday that it now favors a Chinese laboratory leak as the mostly likely origin of the coronavirus pandemic, the latest development in the still-simmering debate over the virus and the nation’s response. Several other intelligence agencies continue to favor the natural-origin theory, and there is no evidence SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind the pandemic, was in any laboratory before the outbreak.

The CIA’s analysis does not appear to draw on new evidence or intelligence sources. It was completed before the new CIA director, John Ratcliffe, was sworn in on Thursday, but Ratcliffe ordered it to be declassified and made public. Ratcliffe, who served as director of national intelligence during the first Trump administration, has been vocal in arguing that the pandemic began from a lab leak.

The CIA has said for years that it did not have enough information to conclude how the Covid pandemic originated. The agency has issued a new assessment this week, with analysts saying they now favor the theory that it emerged from an accidental leak at a research lab in Wuhan, China.
