Newsweek reports:
Florida’s 24-hour snowfall record has been surpassed as a “historic” winter storm swept along the Gulf Coast.
According to The National Centers for Environmental Information, the previous Florida record for the most snow in 24 hours was set in Milton, Santa Rosa County, on March 6, 1954, when four inches was recorded.
This record was smashed after more than double the amount of snowfall fell over parts of North Florida this week, dumping a whopping 8.8 inches of snow around Milton, according to meteorologists.
Yahoo News reports:
A rare, historic snowfall blanketed parts of the southern U.S. on Tuesday, allowing residents to play in the rather unusual weather. Families went snow tubing in Houston. People made snowballs and snow angels. People were even seen skiing on Bourbon Street.
The storm gave New Orleans its first measurable snowfall for the first time in 15 years. In nearby Kenner, La., 4 inches of snow was reported. The last time the area got any measurable snow was in 2009 and it was one-tenth of an inch thick, while the city’s record snowfall was 2.7 inches in 1963, Axios reported.
New Orleans, a city primarily known for its heat and humidity, is likely to experience 4 to 7 inches of snow as the National Weather Service issued its first-ever blizzard warning for southern areas of Louisiana.
The Houston Chronicle reports:
Houston had its snowiest day in more than 50 years on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Houstonians are waking up to another day of extreme winter — but this time the culprit is ice. .
Public officials urged Houston-area drivers to stay off the roads Wednesday after melted snow refroze overnight, leaving black ice on roadways and dangerous driving conditions. Houston police and local law enforcement agencies reported multiple crashes due to ice on highways.
After shutting down Monday before significant snowfall in Houston, the Houston Airport System announced it planned to reopen Wednesday morning. The news came after travelers were stuck at the airport because of the winter storm that slammed southeast Texas with historic amounts of snow.
