Deutsche Welle reports:
Panama reiterated on Tuesday that the sovereignty of its eponymous ship canal was not up for discussion after US President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out military action to regain control. “The sovereignty of our canal is not negotiable and is part of our history of struggle,” Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha said, adding that President Jose Raul Mulino had made his stance clear.
And on Wednesday, Panama Canal Authority leader Ricuarte Vasquez Morales told the Wall Street Journal granting Trump’s demand for US ships passing through the Panama Canal to get preferential treatment would “lead to chaos.” “Rules are rules and there are no exceptions,” he said. “We cannot discriminate for the Chinese, or the Americans, or anyone else,” Morales added. “This will violate the neutrality treaty, international law.”
