El Salvador Agrees To House US Citizens In Its Jails

Axios reports:

El Salvador’s president has offered to “house in his jails dangerous American criminals” and accept deportees of any nationality, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday night. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s [photo] offer is “the most unprecedented and extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world,” per remarks by Rubio.

Rubio made the announcement that was criticized by human rights groups while visiting El Salvador as part of a wider trip across Latin America to push for President Trump’s “America First” policy, which includes plans for large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Rubio called Bukele’s offer “an act of extraordinary friendship” and said it would include accepting for deportation “any criminal from any nationality,” even members of the international criminal gangs MS-13 or Tren de Aragua, which Trump has designated as foreign terrorist organizations.

Last week Trump tasked Rubio with striking agreements for foreign nations to jail American citizens convicted here “for a fee.” El Salvador is notorious for its brutal treatment of prisoners.

Bukele is wildly popular among the cult and he spoke last year at CPAC after visits to El Salvador by Trump Junior and other US far-right leaders.

In 2023, Bukele declared that Democrats would assassinate Tucker Carlson “if they could get away with it.”

In 2021, El Salvador became the first nation in the world to accept Bitcoin as legal tender, a move that later nearly pushed the country into debt default.
