ACLU Petitions SCOTUS To Stop Imminent Deportations

The Trump administration is on the verge of deporting another group of Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act, lawyers for the immigrants told federal courts Friday. The lawyers said the administration is directly defying a Supreme Court order by attempting further deportations without due process. They filed an emergency appeal at the high court asking the justices to halt the deportations, which they said could happen as early as Friday evening without court intervention.

The Venezuelan nationals, who are currently detained in Texas, “are in imminent and ongoing jeopardy of being removed from the United States without notice or an opportunity to be heard,” lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union wrote to the Supreme Court. The deportations, the ACLU said, would be “in direct contravention” of the high court’s April 7 ruling that people deem “alien enemies” must be given a meaningful opportunity to challenge their deportations.
