Politico reports:
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that the Trump administration planned to pursue reforms at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank to achieve a more “sustainable international economic system” that better serves the United States and other countries.
Bessent said the Trump administration would not seek to retreat from those institutions but instead push to play a stronger leadership role and push for major changes to those institutions as part of a plan to “restore equilibrium to the global financial system.”
Bessent charted a series of reforms that the U.S. would seek to advance at the IMF and World Bank. He criticized the IMF for devoting too much time to “work on climate change, gender, and social issues” while failing to hold countries to which it lends money accountable for implementing economic reforms.
