A Trump administration publicity campaign aimed at discouraging illegal migration is off to a rocky start, with Mexico’s government calling for the ads to be pulled and promising to ban such foreign “propaganda” in the future.
The campaign has raised questions in the United States about its overtly political messaging and its price tag — up to $200 million over two years. The ads are appearing at a time when Elon Musk’s U.S. DOGE Service is slashing federal jobs.
In Mexico, it’s been blasted by politicians across the ideological spectrum, including President Claudia Sheinbaum. At Sheinbaum’s urging, Mexico’s Congress is expected to fast-track a law that would outlaw transmission of the ads on major TV and radio channels — in addition to other foreign government “propaganda.”
