Dan “Razin” Caine to lead the Joint Chiefs early Friday morning — elevating a little-known three-star general just seven weeks after President Donald Trump fired Gen. C.Q. Brown from the post. Caine overcame doubts about his qualifications and ability to remain apolitical, and was confirmed in a bipartisan 60-25 vote to serve as the top military adviser to the president.
An unconventional pick by his own admission, Caine retired from the military last year and will be the first Joint Chiefs chair to not have previously served as a four-star general or admiral. The Senate also voted to return Caine to active-duty and promote him so he could take the job. Most Senate Democrats opposed Caine’s confirmation and delayed a vote on Thursday to protest Brown’s firing and a purge of other senior military leaders by Trump.
