Manchester’s ABC affiliate reports:

A New England man who is a U.S. citizen said American border agents in Vermont detained him for several hours Sunday night as he and his wife were trying to return home from Canada. Bachir Atallah said he’s still not sure why he was detained. “He just reached for his gun,” Atallah said. “He’s like, ‘Step out of the vehicle right now.’ I said, ‘OK, I’m stepping out.'”

Atallah is a U.S. citizen. “I was detained. I was not free to leave,” he said. “Holding cells. No shoes, no jacket. It was freezing cold.” Atallah, who is a real estate attorney, said the officers wouldn’t let him call his sister, who is an immigration attorney. His sister, Celine Atallah, said she didn’t get a call until three hours later. Celine Atallah said CBP accessed her brother’s email, which contained client information, under duress.
