Politico reports:
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who has been vocal in opposing what he sees as major cuts to Medicaid, spoke with President Donald Trump on Monday about the issue, he said in a social media post. “Just had a great talk with President Trump about the Big, Beautiful Bill. He said again, NO MEDICAID BENEFIT CUTS,” Hawley wrote on X.
Hawley and Trump’s discussion comes as Senate Republicans weigh potential changes to a House-passed GOP megabill that would lead to hundreds of billions in savings from Medicaid — and kick millions of people off the program, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune will need to win over a significant contingent of so-called “Medicaid moderates” — an ideologically diverse group that includes the conservative Hawley and centrists Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, among others.
